How and where to use guide
Sterling OSB Type 3 board 2400mm x 590mm x 18mmTG4 Tongue & Groove
Primary applications
This OSB3 board is engineered for structural use in demanding conditions. The tongue and groove profile is specifically designed for platform flooring systems where boards must interlock securely to create a stable, unified surface. It is equally effective as roof decking in pitched and flat roof constructions where it must support live loads and resist moisture exposure. The 18mm thickness provides the structural depth needed for typical residential and light commercial joist spacings. Use this board in new build housing, extensions, and renovation projects where moisture resistance and load-bearing performance are critical.
- Platform and suspended timber floors with joists at standard spacings
- Pitched and flat roof decking applications
- New build housing and extensions
- Renovation and refurbishment projects in humid environments
Installation and on-site handling
The tongue and groove edges must remain clean and undamaged during transport and storage to ensure proper joint performance. Stack boards flat on a level, dry surface and protect from prolonged weather exposure. When laying flooring, ensure joists are level and at the correct spacing for 18mm board. Stagger end joints between rows and leave a small expansion gap around room perimeters. Secure boards with appropriate fasteners as specified in your structural design; the T&G joint provides mechanical interlock but does not eliminate the need for proper fixing. Work in dry conditions where possible to maintain board stability and ease of handling.
- Store flat on level ground, protected from weather
- Check joists are level and at correct spacing before laying
- Stagger end joints between rows for structural integrity
- Leave expansion gaps around perimeters
- Secure with appropriate fasteners to structural members
Performance in challenging conditions
This OSB3 board is specifically formulated to perform well in humid conditions, making it suitable for UK house building where moisture exposure is common during construction and in service. The precision-engineered construction eliminates knots, voids, and delamination problems that can compromise durability. The board maintains its structural properties and dimensional stability even when exposed to site moisture during the build phase. However, it should not be left exposed to prolonged rainfall or standing water; provide temporary weather protection during construction and ensure permanent weatherproofing is completed promptly.
- Performs reliably in humid UK construction environments
- Precision engineering eliminates voids and delamination
- Maintains structural integrity during typical site exposure
- Protect from prolonged rainfall and standing water
Maintenance and environmental benefits
Once installed and covered, this board requires no ongoing maintenance beyond ensuring the building envelope remains weatherproof. The zero added formaldehyde formulation means improved indoor air quality with no off-gassing concerns, making it particularly suitable for residential applications. The net carbon negative status reflects the environmental benefit of using this product; more carbon is sequestered in the board than is released during manufacture and transport. This makes it an environmentally responsible choice for specifiers and builders committed to sustainable construction practices.
- Zero added formaldehyde for improved indoor air quality
- Net carbon negative product locks in more CO₂e than emitted
- No maintenance required once installed and weatherproofed
- BBA approved for assured structural performance
