How and where to use guide
Chamfered and Rounded Primed Moisture Resistant MDF Profile 5.49 Mtr 18mm x 117mm
Typical applications and installation
This profile is commonly used for shelving units, cabinetry, and furniture making where a smooth finished edge is essential. The 117mm width makes it suitable for shelf edges, face frames, and decorative trim work. Install using appropriate adhesives or mechanical fixings depending on your application. Ensure the profile is properly supported along its length to prevent sagging, particularly when used as a shelf edge on longer spans. The primed surface is ready for painting or staining, though you may wish to apply additional coats for enhanced durability in high-moisture areas.
- Shelving unit edges and trim
- Cabinet face frames and door edges
- Furniture making and bespoke joinery
- Decorative wall panelling in dry to moderately humid spaces
Moisture resistance and environmental suitability
The moisture resistant treatment makes this profile suitable for use in kitchens, bathrooms, and other humid environments where standard MDF would be vulnerable to swelling. However, this is not a fully waterproof product and should not be used in areas of direct water contact or constant immersion. Ensure adequate ventilation around the installed profile to prevent moisture accumulation. In very wet areas such as shower enclosures or external applications, consider additional protective measures such as sealants or coatings.
- Suitable for kitchens and bathroom cabinetry
- Not recommended for direct water contact or splashing
- Maintain good ventilation to prevent moisture trapping
- Apply additional sealant in high-moisture zones for extended protection
Finishing and maintenance
The primed surface provides a durable base coat that reduces the number of paint coats required. Sand lightly between coats if applying additional finishes. The chamfered and rounded edges are pre-finished and do not require further edge treatment. Keep the profile dry during storage and on site to maintain the integrity of the moisture resistant treatment. Once installed and finished, maintain by dusting regularly and wiping with a damp cloth only when necessary. Avoid prolonged exposure to standing water or high humidity without adequate ventilation.
- Light sanding recommended before final paint or stain application
- Store in dry conditions before installation
- Dust regularly and clean with minimal moisture
- Check periodically for signs of moisture damage in humid locations
Handling and on-site tips
The 5.49m length is substantial and requires careful handling to prevent damage or warping. Support the profile adequately when transporting and storing on site. Use a fine-toothed saw for cutting to minimise chipping of the primed surface. The chamfered and rounded edges are a finished feature, so handle carefully to avoid damage. Allow the profile to acclimatise to the ambient temperature and humidity of the installation space for 24 to 48 hours before fitting, particularly if moving from a cold store to a warm, humid environment.
- Support the full length during transport and storage
- Use fine-toothed saws to minimise edge chipping
- Allow acclimatisation time before installation
- Protect the primed surface from damage during handling and fitting
