How and where to use guide

2440 x 1220 x 18mm MDF

Typical applications

This MDF board is well-suited to furniture manufacture, shop fitting installations, general-purpose joinery work, caravan and motorhome interior construction, and exhibition display systems. The lightweight nature of the board makes it especially valuable for applications where weight reduction is important, such as fitted furniture in caravans or modular display stands that require frequent repositioning. It is also commonly used for decorative panelling, shelving systems, and any joinery where a paintable, stable surface is preferred.

  • Furniture and fitted units
  • Shop and retail fitting
  • Caravan and motorhome interiors
  • Exhibition and display systems
  • Decorative panelling and wall linings
  • Shelving and storage solutions

Preparation and finishing

MDF accepts paint exceptionally well due to its uniform, smooth surface. Before painting, ensure the board is clean and dust-free. All cut edges should be sealed with primer or edge sealer to prevent moisture absorption and swelling. Sand the surface lightly with fine-grit sandpaper if required to achieve the desired finish. The board can also be veneered, laminated, or finished with stain, though sealing edges remains essential. Allow adequate drying time between coats of primer and paint.

  • Seal all cut edges with primer or edge sealer before painting
  • Sand surface lightly with fine-grit paper if needed
  • Apply primer before final paint coats
  • Ensure good ventilation during finishing work
  • Allow adequate drying time between coats

Handling and on-site storage

MDF is heavier than plywood of equivalent thickness but lighter than solid timber, making it manageable for most two-person handling. Store the board flat and level on a clean, dry surface, protecting it from moisture and weather. Avoid standing boards on edge for extended periods, as this can cause warping. Keep the board in a dry environment before installation, as MDF is moisture-sensitive and can swell if exposed to damp conditions. Handle cut edges carefully as they can be fragile until sealed.

  • Store flat on level, dry ground
  • Protect from rain and excessive moisture
  • Avoid prolonged edge-standing storage
  • Keep in dry conditions before installation
  • Handle cut edges with care

Limitations and important considerations

MDF is not suitable for external use or areas subject to prolonged moisture exposure, as the board will absorb water and swell irreversibly. It is not recommended for structural applications or load-bearing purposes where solid timber or engineered boards with higher strength ratings are required. The board must be sealed at all edges and surfaces if used in kitchens or bathrooms where humidity is elevated. Dust produced during machining should be managed with appropriate extraction equipment, and operatives should wear suitable respiratory protection when cutting or sanding.

  • Not suitable for external use or wet environments
  • Not appropriate for structural or load-bearing applications
  • Requires edge sealing in high-humidity areas
  • Use dust extraction when cutting or sanding
  • Wear respiratory protection during machining
