How and where to use guide

2440 x 1220 x 12mm MDF

Typical applications

This 12mm MDF sheet is commonly used across the furniture and joinery trades for internal projects. Its lightweight nature makes it particularly valuable where weight is a design consideration, such as in caravan manufacturing, exhibition displays, and shop fitting installations. The board works well for cabinet construction, shelving, decorative panels, and fitted furniture where a smooth, paintable surface is required.

  • Furniture manufacture and fitted wardrobes
  • Shop fitting and display systems
  • General-purpose joinery and internal panelling
  • Caravan and motorhome interior components
  • Exhibition and display stands
  • Painted finishes and decorative applications

Preparation and machining

MDF machines cleanly and can be cut, routed, drilled, and shaped using standard woodworking tools. Always wear a dust mask when cutting or machining, as MDF produces fine dust. Support the board adequately during cutting to prevent sagging or breakout. Allow the board to acclimatise to site conditions for 48 hours before use to minimise movement. The smooth surface requires minimal sanding before finishing, though light sanding between coats improves paint adhesion.

  • Use sharp tools and support boards properly during machining
  • Wear appropriate dust protection when cutting or routing
  • Allow 48-hour acclimatisation to site humidity and temperature
  • Seal all cut edges before painting to prevent moisture absorption
  • Sand lightly between paint coats for best finish

Finishing and painting

The uniform surface of MDF is ideal for painting and provides an excellent base for both water-based and solvent-based paints. Prime all surfaces, including cut edges, with a suitable primer to seal the board and prevent moisture ingress. Two coats of quality paint will provide a professional finish. MDF is not recommended for staining as it does not accept wood stains effectively; paint or veneer finishes are preferred.

  • Prime all surfaces with MDF primer before painting
  • Pay particular attention to sealing cut edges and drilled holes
  • Apply two coats of quality paint for best coverage and durability
  • Use water-based or solvent-based paints as appropriate to your project
  • Avoid wood stains; use paint or veneer finishes instead

Storage and limitations

Store MDF flat and level on a clean, dry surface, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep boards away from damp areas, as prolonged exposure to moisture will cause swelling and delamination. MDF is not suitable for external use, wet areas such as bathrooms without additional protection, or applications subject to high humidity. The board is heavier than plywood of equivalent thickness and requires adequate support during installation. Ensure proper ventilation when machining to manage dust effectively.

  • Store flat and level in a dry, well-ventilated area
  • Protect from moisture, rain, and prolonged humidity exposure
  • Not suitable for external applications or wet environments
  • Not recommended for unprotected bathroom or kitchen use
  • Ensure adequate structural support during installation
