How and where to use guide
Torus Primed Moisture Resistant MDF Profile 5.49 Mtr 18mm x 117mm
Typical applications and installation
This profile is primarily used as skirting board in residential and light commercial interiors, particularly in moisture-prone areas. The 117mm height makes it suitable for standard room proportions and contemporary design schemes. Install using construction adhesive, panel pins, or screws into timber grounds or direct to blockwork with appropriate fixings. Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and level before fixing. The primed finish allows immediate decoration with emulsion or specialist paints without additional undercoating, though a primer coat is recommended in high-moisture bathrooms.
- Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and cloakrooms
- Can be used as wall panelling or dado rail in moisture-sensitive areas
- Compatible with standard timber grounds and modern plasterboard installations
- Suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects
Moisture resistance and durability
The moisture-resistant MDF core resists swelling, cupping, and warping when exposed to humidity and temperature fluctuations typical of kitchens and bathrooms. This engineered stability makes it more reliable than standard MDF in these environments. However, it is not suitable for external use or areas subject to prolonged water immersion. Protect cut ends with paint or sealant to maintain moisture resistance at joints and mitred corners.
- Resists humidity-induced movement better than standard MDF
- Not suitable for external applications or wet rooms with standing water
- Seal all cut edges with paint or wood filler to prevent moisture ingress
- Maintain adequate ventilation in fitted kitchens and bathrooms
Preparation, finishing, and on-site handling
The factory priming reduces preparation time significantly. Inspect the profile on delivery for damage and store flat in a dry environment. Before installation, fill any minor surface imperfections with flexible wood filler and sand lightly. Joints and mitres should be filled and sanded before final decoration. The primed surface accepts emulsion, eggshell, and satin finishes directly; use a quality paint for best results in moisture areas. Allow adequate drying time between coats, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces.
- Store flat and dry; protect from site moisture before installation
- Use flexible filler at joints to accommodate minor movement
- Sand lightly after filling to ensure smooth finish
- Apply two coats of quality emulsion or eggshell in bathrooms and kitchens
- Ensure good site ventilation during and after decoration
Limitations and maintenance
Moisture-resistant MDF is durable in normal domestic humidity but will deteriorate if exposed to sustained water spray or condensation without adequate ventilation. It is heavier than timber and requires careful handling during installation. The profile is not loadbearing and should not be used for structural applications. Long-term performance depends on proper installation, adequate site ventilation, and regular maintenance of the painted finish. Inspect periodically for paint failure or moisture damage, particularly around joints and at floor level.
- Not suitable for external use or unventilated wet rooms
- Heavier than timber; use appropriate handling and fixings
- Repaint or touch up as needed to maintain moisture protection
- Check for paint failure or swelling, especially at skirting base
