How and where to use guide
Square Primed Moisture Resistant MDF Profile 5.49 Mtr 18mm x 148mm
Typical applications
This profile is commonly used in furniture making, fitted joinery and storage solutions. Its 148mm width and 18mm thickness make it suitable for shelving spans, cabinet sides, display case construction and as a base component for built-in furniture. The moisture-resistant properties mean it performs well in kitchens, bathrooms and other interior spaces where humidity levels may fluctuate.
- Shelving units and shelf supports
- Display case construction
- Furniture making and fitted joinery
- Cabinet sides and backing panels
- Storage solution components
Installation and preparation
The profile arrives primed, which provides a base for finishing but requires proper preparation before installation. Measure and mark your cutting lines clearly before making cuts with a fine-toothed saw to minimise chipping. Ensure all cut edges are sealed with primer or paint to maintain moisture resistance. Use appropriate fixings for your application—screws are generally preferable to nails for MDF as they provide better holding power and reduce the risk of splitting.
- Cut to length using a fine-toothed saw
- Seal all cut edges with primer or paint
- Use screws rather than nails for better holding
- Allow adequate support spacing to prevent sagging
- Check for level and plumb during installation
Finishing and maintenance
Although primed, the profile will require finishing with paint or stain depending on your project requirements. The primed surface provides a good base for emulsion paint, gloss or specialist finishes. Avoid prolonged exposure to standing water or high moisture environments beyond normal interior use. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and wipe with a slightly damp cloth if needed. Do not use abrasive cleaners that may damage the finish.
- Apply paint or stain over the primed surface
- Ensure adequate ventilation during finishing
- Protect from prolonged water exposure
- Dust regularly to maintain appearance
- Avoid abrasive cleaning methods
On-site handling and storage
Store the profile flat in a dry location away from direct sunlight and damp conditions. Protect from weather exposure during transport and on-site storage. Handle carefully to avoid damage to edges and corners, particularly after cutting. Allow the material to acclimatise to the ambient temperature and humidity of your workspace before installation, as MDF can expand or contract slightly with changes in moisture content.
- Store flat in a dry, sheltered location
- Protect from rain and direct sunlight
- Allow acclimatisation time before installation
- Handle cut edges carefully to prevent damage
- Keep away from heat sources and damp areas
