How and where to use guide

Dalston Black Prefinished Door 1981mm x 762mm x 35mm

Typical applications and installation

This door is designed for internal use in residential and light commercial properties where a contemporary black aesthetic is required. It suits modern interiors, feature walls, and spaces where you want to avoid traditional wood tones. Installation follows standard practice: hang the door into a prepared frame using three hinges, ensuring the frame is square and plumb before fixing. The 15mm trim allowance per edge (30mm total) means you can plane or sand up to 15mm from any edge if the opening is slightly undersized, or leave full dimensions if the frame is accurate. This tolerance is essential on-site because doorway frames often vary by a few millimetres due to settlement or construction tolerances.

  • Suitable for internal doorways in homes, offices, and commercial interiors
  • Use where a prefinished black door eliminates decoration time and cost
  • Ideal for new builds, refurbishment projects, and feature wall applications
  • Hang using standard three-hinge installation with appropriate hinges for the door weight

Preparation and fitting

Before installation, inspect the door for any transport damage and allow it to acclimatise to the room for 48 hours if the site has been unheated. Check that your frame is square using a spirit level and measure diagonals to confirm—both should be equal. The door's nominal size is 1981mm x 762mm; the 15mm trim allowance on each edge means you can reduce dimensions if needed. Measure your frame opening carefully: if it is slightly smaller than the door, plane the stiles and rails evenly, removing no more than 15mm per edge. Mark hinge positions at 150mm from top and bottom, with a third hinge centred, then chisel hinge recesses to the correct depth so the door hangs flush. Ensure the frame is securely fixed and not twisted before hanging.

  • Allow 48 hours acclimatisation in the heated space before installation
  • Check frame is square and plumb; measure diagonals to confirm
  • Use the 15mm trim allowance per edge if the opening is undersized
  • Fit hinges at 150mm from top and bottom, plus one centre hinge
  • Ensure frame is rigid and not twisted before hanging the door

Maintenance and care

The Dalston door arrives with a factory-applied black prefinish that requires minimal maintenance. Wipe the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and maintain appearance. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners, solvents, or excessive moisture, which can damage the finish. If the door is exposed to high humidity or damp conditions, ensure adequate ventilation in the room to prevent moisture ingress. The FSC certified timber core is stable and durable; minor scuffs to the black finish can be touched up with appropriate black paint or finish restorer if required. The 10 Year Manufacturer's Guarantee covers manufacturing defects in the timber and finish under normal use conditions.

Limitations and on-site tips

This door is for internal use only and is not suitable for external applications or areas of high moisture such as bathrooms without additional protection. The 35mm thickness is standard for internal doors and provides adequate sound insulation for typical domestic use. Do not attempt to reduce the door thickness; the 15mm trim allowance applies only to edge planing. If your opening is significantly larger than the door dimensions, you will need to adjust the frame rather than the door. Store the door flat and supported on a level surface during transport and on-site to prevent warping. Ensure adequate ventilation during and after installation to allow any residual moisture to dissipate naturally.

  • Internal use only; not suitable for external or high-moisture areas
  • Do not reduce door thickness; trim allowance applies to edges only
  • Store flat and supported on a level surface to prevent warping
  • Ensure site ventilation during and after installation
  • If opening is oversized, adjust the frame rather than the door
